IPSWICH AND DISTRICT BADMINTON LEAGUE

CHAIRMAN’S REMARKS TO AGM 3 SEPTEMBER 2012

The Committee met on 6 occasions during the season to deal with League business and to organise events.  The elected Committee members were joined during the year by co-optee Richard Suttle – all are available for re-election.  Thank you all for your contributions to running the League and its events – Ian, our long-serving secretary, Derek – Junior Tournaments organiser, our treasurer, Alys, webmaster Glenn, Tony for taking on the Dinner Dance, Amanda for the Playford Trophy and Richard for filling in some of the gaps on our very small Committee from his first meeting.  In addition to their specific contributions, I have been very grateful for the support and commitment shown by my colleagues throughout the season.  Thank you also to Stuart Girling for helping Tony as he took on the Dinner Dance, to Adam Rae for his continued sponsorship of the result cards, and to Gordon Blake for once again auditing the accounts.  We are also very pleased to have secured sponsorship of shuttles from Badminton Base for the Junior Championships – thank you to Ben Williams.

Last year the Committee decided to run the early rounds of the Championships and Veterans event on one day – a special thank you to Derek for running the preliminary rounds set up by Glenn, and organising finals night in mine and Glenn’s absence.  We received some very constructive feedback from many of those who entered and on which we are hoping to build for the 2012/13 event, again using Suffolk One for the preliminary rounds.  The Committee also remains alert to the effect on Clubs and League play of the Performance Centre which continues at Suffolk One – details of any relevant experience, good or bad is invited.  No rule changes are proposed this year, but I would ask Clubs for their continued co-operation, both in having regard to the League Rules (available on the website) especially when submitting nominations, and also when completing match cards – please remember that Ian, who does a wonderful job of monitoring the facts and figures on players, scores and matches, can spend a considerable amount of time sorting out incorrect results, deciphering poor writing and checking out players whose names are incorrect, incomplete or confused with similar names and initials.  Please also continue to use the website – we are looking to develop its user friendly applications and hopefully make it more interactive in the future.

During the year we considered a generic request to the League and Suffolk BA about publicity – or lack of it – for badminton.  The Committee is generally happy with the current press coverage when sending in copy for publication, but concluded that at the present time we do not have enough personnel to enable us to be more proactive in this area by, for example, submitting a weekly or fortnightly article for publication.  However, we are aware that Steve Cox, SBA Chairman, is trying to improve the situation and raise badminton’s profile.

In conclusion, and before I welcome Di Thomas to say a few words about the ways in which Badminton England can help support clubs, thank you for your commitment as Club officials and members, your support for the League, and your comments, which we welcome.
