Championships

Northgate Sports Centre in Ipswich hosted the finals of the 48th Ipswich and District Badminton League (IDBL) Championships with the finals of the veterans’ tournaments also being played at the same time. YMCA players won three of the main events with Miguel Soler picking up two titles.

The singles matches saw two finals night debutants, Alan Waistell (Corinthians) and Emma Lee (Abbeygate), both attempting to prevent previous winners from gaining further success. The first game of the men’s singles between Waistell and James Scott (YMCA) was a fairly even contest, but Scott pulled away in the latter stages, winning 21-15. His greater mobility and precise drop shots allowed him to take control of the second game, winning 21-5, to take the title for the third year running. The ladies singles followed a similar pattern with Lee and Jo Hughes (Abbeygate) playing a very tight first game. At 19-all, Hughes took advantage of an over-hit long serve by her opponent, before winning the next point to take the game, 21-19. Hughes forged ahead during the second game and completed her third successive victory, and tenth overall in this event, by a 21-10 margin.

The YMCA pairing of Sue Poole and Soler defeated the Abbeygate duo of Hughes and Andrew Brinkley, 21-19, 21-12, to take the mixed title for the ninth year running and eleventh time in total. There was further success for the YMCA club as Soler and Paul Adderson won the men’s doubles event for the seventh time. They came from game point down in their match with the Corinthians partnership of Waistell and Brendan Goffin, to win 23-21, before completing their victory by a 21-17 margin in the second.

The last encounter of the evening provided an exciting climax, as the contest required a third game to decide the outcome. Karen Adderson (Meadlands) and Amanda Newcombe (Stowmarket) fought back from 18-13 down in the decider against Poole and Sarah Gooding (YMCA) to win the ladies doubles 10-21, 21-13, 21-19.

Playford

Kesgrave were this year’s winners of the Ipswich and District Badminton League Team Championships, for the Playford Trophy. In the final, played at Suffolk New College Sports Centre, they defeated Framlingham, to win the event for the first time in their history.

Kesgrave gained victories over Corinthians, Stowmarket and YMCA – all division one clubs, before defeating East Bergholt in their semi-final. Framlingham had a bye in the first round before reaching the final by beating Walton and Kirton, Abbeygate and Glevering.

The event is handicapped, based on league positions, and Kesgrave (+49) began with an advantage over Framlingham (scratch). This margin was reduced to 32 points after Framlingham came out on top in the first two mixed matches. In the later stages of the event convincing displays by Kesgrave in the two men’s encounters ensured that they went one better than the runners-up spot achieved in last year’s event. Paul McEvoy played a key role, as he finished the evening undefeated in his three matches.

Kesgrave’s victory by 381 to 320 points concluded a very successful campaign for the club with four of their six teams gaining promotion this season.
