U15's

The Ipswich and District
Badminton League Junior Championships, for the Under 15 age group, were held at
Northgate Sports Centre. In a well-supported event, with a number of young
players aged 12 and under taking part, pride of place goes to Anna Godbold (Meridians)
who captured a hat trick of titles. Gavin Coyne (YMCA) and Ryan Newcombe
(Stowmarket) were also successful in winning two events.
32 players contested the boys’
singles event and there were no upsets as the top ranked players progressed as
expected in the early rounds. At the semi final stage, Coyne defeated Levi
Hoang (YMCA), and Newcombe overcame Jonathan Kuribayashi-Coleman (Meridians).
The final produced some excellent badminton in a match of few errors as both
players tested their opponent with good length clears and enterprising net
play. At the halfway stage, Newcombe had established an 11-5 lead, before Coyne
pulled back to 13-all. Both players gave their all in the final stages, as
Newcombe emerged the victor, 21-19, leaving Coyne as runner-up for the second
year running.
The first match losers entered
a plate competition and Sam Abbott (Meridians) won his 4 matches to emerge as
the winner, defeating Ewan Payne (Framlingham), 21-16, in the final.
Godbold reached the final of
the girls’ singles with a semi-final victory over Betsy Chenery (Thorpeness).
In the second semi-final, Katie Clark (Thorpeness) defeated Saskia Wright
(Woodbridge). The early exchanges of the final were even, but Godbold edged
ahead from 7-all and then retained her lead from thereon, to win the title,
21-12, leaving Clark as defeated finalist for the second year running.
16 pairs contested the boys’ doubles and were split into
three groups, with the 3 group winners and best runners-up going forward to the
knockout stage. Coyne and Newcombe, emerged undefeated from Group A, and
overcame Sam Abbott and Kuribayashi-Coleman, the winners of Group C, in the
semi-final. Matthew Cross (Corinthians) and Hoang qualified, as the best
runners-up and beat the Abbeygate pairing of Michael Edwards and Thomas Fisher,
the Group B winners, in their semi-final. Coyne and Newcombe were comfortable
winners in the final, defeating their younger opponents, 21-8.
The 6 pairs in the girls’ doubles played each other
in a round-robin format. In the last match of the event, 2 pairs, undefeated so
far, met to decide the contest. Megan Clark (Thorpeness) and Godbold overcame
Katie Clark and Chenery in a closely fought contest, 21-18, to lift the trophy.
In the last event of the day, the mixed doubles,
there were semi-final victories for Godbold and Coyne against Megan Clark and
Edwards and for Katie Clark and Newcombe over the Abbeygate pair, Hannah
Robertshaw and Matt Osborne. Godbold and Coyne took the title with a 21-13
victory in the final.
